  ANew Chieh-Qua Variety'Xinxiu No. 6'


  The new Chieh-Qua variety 'Xinxiu No.6', bred by Vegetable Research Institute, was approved in the Guangdong Province Crops Variety Approve Conference held recently. 'Xinxiu No. 6' is the first approved new Chieh-Qua variety after entering the sequences of Special Fund for Scientific Innovation Strategy-Construction of High-Level Academy of Agriculture Science of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

  'Xinxiu No. 6' is a luxuriant growth and mid-early maturing variety. It needs about 71 days from seeding emergency to mature in Guangzhou in the spring, while 45 days in the autumn. The first female flower emerges on the 8th to 10th node, and the fruiting positions are oriented from the main stem and lateral stem. The color of eatable un-maturing fruits is green with star-shaped green-white dots and trichomes. The length, the transverse diameter, and the pulp thickness of eatable un-maturing fruits are about 20, 6.5, and 1.4 cm, respectively. The pulp of 'Xinxiu No. 6' tastes tender, smooth, and dense with excellent quality, and the average weight of a single un-maturing fruit is about 500 grams. The field performance is resistant to heat stress, coldness, flood, and drought. In the spring conservation test in Guangdong Experimental Station in 2020, the average yield reached 5373.5 kg/mu, 15.6% higher than that of the variety 'Guanghua No. 6'. The content of crude protein, soluble solids, and Vitamin C are 0.39g/100g, 5.0g/100g, and 17.1mg/100g, respectively. 'Xinxiu No. 6' is suitable for planting during spring and autumn in fertile irrigated land in Southern China, such as Guangdong and Guangxi.
